Alfrēds Krauklis
Alfrēds Krauklis, born December 8, 1911, died November 17, 1991.
An eight-time Latvian basketball champion. From 1932 to 1940, he played for the Latvian national basketball team, participating in 28 games and was one of the players with the most appearances for the national team during the interwar period. As a member of the Latvian national team, he won a silver medal at the European Basketball Championship (1939).

Krauklis himself had not attended higher education institutions, yet he tried to instill in his students a lesson he had learned in his youth: you cannot earn a living from sports alone. Among coach Krauklis’s trainees were not only 29 outstanding sports masters (including Olympic silver medalist Cezars Ozers and European champions Visvaldis Eglītis and Oļģerts Jurgensons), but also candidates of science, engineers, and coaches.
After leaving his position as a coach of the Riga VEF master team, Krauklis worked as a youth basketball coach at the VEF Children and Youth Sports School. After his death, in honor of his contribution to Latvian bsketball, the school was renamed the “Alfrēds Krauklis VEF Basketball School.”
Since 1992, an international Alfrēds Krauklis Memorial Basketball Tournament has been held annually.
Jānis Rimbenieks
